DFLer Borrud announces a second bid for Minnesota Senate

DFLer Borrud announces a second bid for Minnesota Senate

After narrowly losing her bid for the Minnesota Senate in 2020, Dr. Aleta Borrud has announced she will make a second run at the seat.

Borrud, a former geriatrician at Mayo Clinic, will again compete for Senate District 26 as a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.

The seat has been held by Republican State Sen. Carla Nelson since 2010.

“The urgent issues that propelled me to run in 2020 are even more pressing now,” Borrud said in a statement. “We must address the climate crisis, the rising costs of healthcare, and deepening economic insecurity. Our community will thrive when we invest in opportunities for everyone to achieve their potential — living with dignity and security.”

She added, “The current senator is preventing Minnesota from making the investments our families need, such as paid family leave, and affordable housing, childcare, and healthcare. The status quo is failing working Minnesotans. I will put people’s needs first and promise to work hard to bring everyone’s voices in our community to St. Paul.”

Borrud lost by less than two percentage points to Nelson in 2020.

As a result of redistricting, all 2021 Minnesota House and Senate seats will be on the ballot again in 2022. The GOP currently holds a 34-31 majority in the Senate (there are also two state senators registered as independents).
