Bernie Sanders returning to Rochester for campaign rally Saturday night

Bernie Sanders returning to Rochester for campaign rally Saturday night

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will hold a rally Saturday night in Rochester — just three days ahead of the Minnesota caucus.

According to his campaign, Sanders will "discuss a wide range of issues important to Minnesotans, including making college affordable, getting big money out of politics, and combating climate change."

The event will begin at 8 p.m. (doors open at 5:30), and is free and open to the public. Admission is first come, first served. Tickets are not required, though the campaign encourages attendees to RSVP.

This will be Sanders' second visit to Rochester this campaign season. He held a rally in July at the Rochester International Events Center.

His Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, is sending her daughter, Chelsea, to Minnesota for events across the state on Sunday and Monday. According to the Clinton campaign, Chelsea will make appearances in Rochester, Duluth, Minneapolis and St. Paul. Exact times have not been released.

Minnesota Democrats including U.S. Rep. Tim Walz, Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, and Gov. Mark Dayton — have overwhelmingly lined up behind Clinton. The most recent Star Tribune poll showed Clinton with a healthy lead over Sanders in Minnesota.

None of the five Republican candidates have announced plans to visit our area. However, front-runner Donald Trump did send a campaign adviser to Rochester on Thursday to speak with supporters.

Voters in 12 states will head to the polls for Super Tuesday. Minnesota is one of just three that will hold caucuses, versus traditional primaries.

Locally, the GOP caucus begins Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Mayo High School; Democrats can find their caucus location here
