Nonprofits join forces to support Rochester's homeless population

The Landing MN has found a temporary home as it transitions out of the old Silver Lake fire station site.

Starting on Monday, the organization will operate out of the Salvation Army of Rochester’s Social Services Center, 115 First Avenue NE. It will continue to use the site for the duration of its build-out of a new day center at 426 Third Avenue SE (in the former National Pawn Shop building).

The Salvation Army site, according to the announcement, will open at 8 a.m. as usual, with programming run by staff from both organizations until 4 p.m. on weekdays. The Landing MN will staff extended hours of operation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.

Services provided at the day center will include free showers, access to a resource room of clothing and other basic needs, and daily served meals.

“The Salvation Army has always been and continues to be actively engaged in serving those experiencing homelessness,” said Lisa Mueller, of the Salvation Army. “In addition to our array of other programs. During this transition for The Landing MN, we are happy to help fill the gap and ensure that no important services to this population are interrupted.”

The Landing had been operating a day center out of the Silver Lake fire station for the past couple of years. Its lease with the City of Rochester, however, was set to expire at the end of this month.
