State grant will support expansion of nature playground at Cascade Lake

Rochester Parks and Rec has secured a $379,000 grant from the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission to support an “inclusive expansion” of the nature playground at Cascade Lake Regional Park.

The project, according to the city, will increase the footprint of the park’s play space to more than twice its current size. The grant provides just under half of the funding needed for the project.

“We hope this expansion positively impacts all users through a unique blend of play, sensory interactions and traditional play ideas using more natural elements,” said Mike Nigbur, head of the parks and forestry division. “What really makes this project stand out is its focus on providing all children with the ability to play alongside one another in almost any area of the new playground.”

The enhanced playground is part of a years-long effort to turn the former gravel mine into a multi-use recreation area.

Other enhancements coming to Cascade in 2022 include the addition of an amphitheater, park pavilion, park shelter, and a central drop off area. The state of Minnesota is also installing a fishing pier at the park next spring.
