Outdoor consignment shop opening in Rochester

Rochester’s outdoor recreation enthusiasts will soon have another option for buying and selling camping supplies, kayaks, and other gear.

Janky Gear, a consignment shop owned by Rochester entrepreneur Paige Jehnke, is set hold a soft opening this Saturday, Sept. 18. The business is located at 205 N Broadway, in the strip mall kitty corner to the Castle.

Jehnke — whose adventures include backpacking in Baja, Mexico and guiding kayak tours in Seaward, Alaska — says she came up with the idea during the pandemic. While working as a marine engineer overseas, Covid-19 moved in and forced her crew to quarantine on the ship for five months.

“To say the least, I had ample time to develop my business plan and dream of outdoor adventures,” said Jehnke. “Last spring, I decided to go for it. I gave my notice and have been focusing 100 percent on Janky Gear.”

Jehnke says the store will offer equipment affordable enough for first-timers, as well as top brands for the more seasoned outdoor adventurers.

Products will include camping and hiking supplies, paddle boards, kayaks, and bicycles. With winter coming up, the store is also adding skis, snowboards, and winter clothing to its inventory.

Jehnke says she also hopes to eventually offer classes and guided trips. To follow along for updates, visit Janky Gear’s Facebook page.
