Staver will not seek third term as council president

With only a few days remaining to file, Rochester City Council President Randy Staver announced he will not be seeking a third term in office.

Staver’s decision to step down from his role, which he has held since 2013, comes on the heels of announcements from three new contenders vying for the position. Brooke Carlson, Greg Munson and Kathleen Harrington have all filed paperwork for the at-large council seat.

“It’s time to step back a little and take a look at other opportunities,” Staver said in an announcement Friday.

During Staver’s tenure, the council oversaw the first phase of Destination Medical Center and approved a long-range citywide comprehensive plan. He retired from Mayo Clinic last year after a 37-year career.

“It’s been a great opportunity with many challenges and rewards,” Staver said of his time in office. “Being able to serve in the community where I grew up has been humbling. Now it’s time to move on and I have no regrets.”
