Warming center seeks volunteers, donations

Warming center seeks volunteers, donations

The now up-and-running Rochester Community Warming Center is looking for additional volunteers and donations.

The operator of the shelter, Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota, says volunteers will work alongside train staff to assist individuals in need.

The shelter, located 200 Fourth Street SE, will be open each night through March from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m to anyone in need of a place to stay.

Anyone who would like to sign up as a volunteer can do so. The training only lasts about an hour. Catholic Charities is also encouraging community partners to form teams of volunteers to help out one or two nights a month.

In addition to volunteers, the shelter is also seeking donations this holiday season. Items can be dropped off this Friday between 1-3 p.m.

Below are the items currently needed.

  • Gift Cards for local grocery stores (to be used to purchase food for the Rochester Community Warming Center)

  • Laundry detergent and dryer sheets

  • Toilet paper

  • Toiletries (bar soap, shampoo, shaving cream, razors, etc.)

  • Hats and mittens

  • Socks

  • Dish soap

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Kitchen items

  • Cleaning items (disposable cleaning gloves, cleaning solutions, abrasive pads, disinfecting wipes, window cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner)

  • Paper towels

Of course, monetary donations are also being accepted. Mayo Clinic has agreed to match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000.
