City approves permit for first food truck to begin operating downtown
A food truck. Parked on the street in downtown Rochester. Legally.
That will be the sight this Wednesday when the Back Alley Kitchen sets up along Second Avenue Southwest for the lunch rush. The city council approved the business's permit request Monday night, making it the first mobile food vendor to be licensed to operate downtown.

Back Alley's owner, Muharem Dedic, said he plans to set up on Second Street on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. He will also test out the area around the St. Marys Hospital campus for late-night service.
"We worked hard to be the first ones — to write the history," he said.
Dedic, a Bosnia native, started Back Alley with another local chef, Fred Regal, who hails from Austria. The two blended their tastes and experiences to create a unique menu rich with international flavor. The food, all of which is made from scratch, ranges from a Bosnian ćevapi to a Vienna schnitzel.
So far, Back Alley is the only vendor to request approval to operate downtown since the city changed its ordinance to allow mobile food vendors in the central business district. Speaking by phone Monday afternoon, Dedic said he hopes more trucks will follow in their footsteps.
"The public wants them, so why not give it a shot?"
