Sep 9 Lourdes running back takes home statewide honor for 5-TD performance

Lourdes High School senior Mason Carstens' five-touchdown performance against Byron last Friday night didn't go unnoticed.

The Minnesota State High School League on Wednesday selected Mason as this season's first recipient of the Old Dutch High School Athlete of the Week award. Mason rushed 19 times for 278 yards in Lourdes' 42-7 victory over Byron.

In addition to on-field accomplishments, the award also recognizes students for their contributions as students and community members. According to the MSHL, Mason has a 3.6 GPA and has been involved in volunteering for Lourdes in many community service projects, such as the ringing of Salvation Army bells for the kettle drive.

Mason and his teammates will host Cannon Falls this Friday night. The Lourdes football team, which won the Minnesota Class 3A football championship last year, is 3-0 at this season's halfway mark.
